Open sewing cafe

You are absolutely welcome to join the Open Sewing Cafe if you don’t speak Dutch!

During the Open Sewing Cafe, you can stop by Steekje Los whenever works for you to work on your own sewing project. You can ask for help and/or advice from an instructor at the sewing cafe.
The Open Sewing Cafe takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 14 to 18 o’clock.

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?
No need, we have many sewing machines available at Steekje Los. During the Open Sewing Cafe you essentially rent a sewing machine and workstation by the hour and pay when you leave.
We have regular sewing machines and sergers; you can use both at the sewing cafe. An instructor can, of course, help you with threading the machines.
You’re also welcome to bring your own machine (this doesn’t affect the price).

Do I need to register or reserve a spot in advance?
No, you don’t. It’s all in the name: Open Sewing Cafe. It hasn’t happened yet that there’s not enough space for everyone who wants to participate.

Can I ask questions? Can I get some guidance with my project?
Absolutely! That’s exactly what the instructors are there for. You can always ask me or another instructor at the sewing cafe for help. We can help you thread the machine, brainstorm ideas for your upcycling project, or guide you with a complicated part of the sewing pattern you’re working on.

What do I need to bring?
You need to bring your sewing project, which essentially means: fabric to work with and an idea of what you want to work on. And if needed: a sewing pattern and specific sewing supplies (think about zippers or buttons). We have a library of sewing pattern magazines that you can use for free at Steekje los. In the small fabric shop you can also buy your supplies. We have all kinds of secondhand and/or vintage fabrics, haberdashery, and a large cabinet with thread in every color (Gutermann brand).

Is it suitable for absolute beginners? Is everyone at the sewing cafe really advanced at sewing?
If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you’re also welcome at the sewing cafe, but you do need to bring a sewing project that you’ll work on relatively independently. Of course, an instructor can help you with operating the sewing machine.

The sewing cafe participants vary greatly in skill level. Some are just starting out and are working on finishing a project from the Beginners 1 course, while others have been sewing for years and would like to sew something on a serger as they don’t have one at home.

What does it cost?
The Open Sewing Cafe costs €10 per hour. It’s €7 per hour for those who have previously taken a course at Steekje los or from Tinka (at Parnassos). You pay by card afterward.
Will you check your time of arrival? That makes it easy to calculate how long you’ve worked in the sewing cafe, when you leave.

When is it?
Every weekend. But, always make sure to check the current opening hours, as sometimes other plans are scheduled at another location, which means the Sewing Cafe is cancelled.

Saturday: 14-18
Sunday: 14-18
